The Complete Pinball Machine Shipping Checklist for 2026
Pinball machines have more moving parts than any other arcade game. This checklist ensures every component survives transit — from the playfield to the backbox.
Why Pinball Machines Need Special Handling
A pinball machine is a 250–350 lb collection of glass, steel balls, solenoids, circuit boards, LED displays, and precision mechanical assemblies. The playfield alone contains dozens of targets, ramps, and mechanisms calibrated to millimeter tolerances. One hard bump can crack the playfield glass, dislodge a ramp, or knock a circuit board loose.
With modern pins from Stern, Jersey Jack, and American Pinball selling for $6,000–$12,000, proper shipping prep is non-negotiable.
Pre-Shipping Checklist
Backbox
- Fold the backbox down onto the playfield (most modern pins have a locking fold-down mechanism)
- If the backbox doesn't fold, remove the translite and DMD/LCD display and pack separately
- Secure all loose wiring connectors with zip ties
Playfield
- Remove all loose balls from the machine — check the trough, the ball lock, and the drain
- Tape down or remove any raised ramps that could snap off
- Place a foam sheet over the playfield glass to absorb shock
Legs
- Remove all four legs and the head bolts
- Bag all hardware (bolts, levelers, brackets) and tape the bag to the inside of the cabinet
- Wrap each leg in bubble wrap
Cabinet Exterior
- Wrap the entire cabinet in moving blankets — minimum two layers
- Secure blankets with shrink wrap or furniture straps
- Protect the coin door with cardboard and tape
- Cover the lockdown bar with foam padding
Documentation
- Photograph every angle of the machine before wrapping
- Record the serial number and model
- Note any pre-existing wear or damage in writing
- Declare the full value for insurance purposes
Shipping Options for Pinball
Blanket wrap freight is the gold standard for pinball shipping. The machine is picked up from inside your home, wrapped, loaded horizontally into the truck, strapped, and delivered inside the destination. Cost: $500–$1,200 depending on distance.
Avoid standard LTL if possible — pinball machines on pallets in shared trailers are at higher risk of forklift damage and shifting.
